Clinical Trial of Misoprostol(Cytotec^(¢ç)) for Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug-Induced Gastroduodenitis

Abstract
Nonsteroidal anti -inflammatory drugs(NSAID) have been found to cause gastrxluodenal mucosal damage.
Misoprostol(Cytotec¢ç) is a synthetic prostaglandin which is related structurally to naturally occuring prostaglandin El (PGE1), and PGE1 has long been recognized as an effective inhibiter of gastric acid secretion, and has mucosal protective properties in Gastroduodenurn.
Twenty patients with gastroduodenitis symptoms caused by NSAID therapy for Rheumatoid arthritis or Osteoarthritis were treated with misoprostol for a maximum of 8 we-As from March to April, 1987.
The misoprostol regimen was 200mcg p.o, BID or TID.
After two weeks of treatment, 65% of patients were improved or had none of the gastrointestinal symptoms. After four weeks 66.6% of patients had none of the gastrointestinal symptoms, and finally after 8 weeks, 88.2% of the cases had none of the gastrointestinal symptoms and 94.1% of the cases were improved.
Severe epigastric pain was present in 3 cases(15%).
It is concluded that misoprostol(Cytotec¢ç) 200mcg is effective, safe and well tolerated drug in the treatment of NSAIDs induced gastroduodenitis.
